I think that librarians spend a lot of time organizing books and trying to provide resources for students. I think that as education levels increase the amount of work a librarian has to do increases. In elementary schools librarians just have to help kids find books and make sure they are put back in the same place. In middle school the books start becoming more sophisticated and the library is bigger so the librarians have to spend more time organizing and making sure that the books get placed in the correct place because more important books are checked out. I think high school librarians have it the hardest though. When kids are in high school they are really talkative and loud and as much as the librarians want the kids to enjoy their time in the library, they have to meet everyone’s needs. They have to try to keep the noise down for the kids that go in to study and do homework. They have to make sure they know where to locate all of the books and keep them organized. In college there is so much more information and literature that needs to be kept track of that the job because far more intense – in my opinion. They don’t have to deal with as many obnoxious high school students, but it’s not like all college kids truly act mature. In college I feel like librarians have the same responsibilities as the librarians in high school, but it is far more intensified because the library is a central place for research when you reach college. I think it would be really cool if all librarians taught students on plagiarism like the librarians in this program do! I think in the future librarians will be replaced with technology though, everything is being replaced with technology, it’s only a matter of time before technology replaces everything..

ReplyDeleteYou are definitely correct that librarians spend a lot of time providing access to resources, but they spend less and less time organizing print books. At this library we have about 9 journals we receive in print format (and put on the shelf) but we receive over 33,000 journals in electronic format.
ReplyDeleteNoise is always an issue in libraries. We get complaints from our users that it is too noisy in the library. However a lot of students have group projects to work on and so they need to be able to talk.
I think that in the future libraries will have more technology and less print, but that the library will still be a gathering place, espeically for group projects.
